Notice is hereby given that there are two (2) vacancies on the Board of Trustees for the Deer Mountain Sanitary District for three (3) year terms. These open positions have been served by Dan O'Connor and Martin Fabens, and those terms are complete. Petitions may be picked up by contacting the Lawrence County Auditors Office or [email protected]. Per SDCL 34A-5-21.2, to serve as a trustee of a sanitary district, the person shall be a resident of the sanitary district. Completed petitions must contain the name of candidate, residence, business address, and the office for which the candidate is named and shall be signed by at least 5% of the qualified voters. Completed petitions must be returned to Clerk at the address below. The deadline for submitting the petitions is 5:00 pm, Tuesday, August 18, 2026. The annual meeting for the Deer Mountain Sanitary District is September 1, 2026, at DMV Sales Office, 11187 Deer Mountain Road, Lead, SD & via Zoom. The election will take place Tuesday, September 15, 2026 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 21375 Mule Deer Drive, Lead, SD. We have received a report of two large black bears spotted at the top of Deer Mountain Village and Terry Summit Road.
SDGFP wants you to know that IT IS ILLEGAL TO KILL these bears and they will be monitored closely. All bears are a protected species in South Dakota.
If you spot a black bear in the area, please notify us or our regional SDGFP wildlife management contact Chad Sebade 605-381-9996. They ask that you take a picture and leave a message if they aren’t available. Please send us any images of the bear that you take with location information.
